Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 on materials and articles in contact with food is a framework regulation on food safety. The aim is to manufacture materials in such a way that, under normal or foreseeable conditions of use, they do not transfer constituents to food in quantities that endanger human health, bring about an unacceptable change in composition or impair the organoleptic properties of the food. Individual measures on material properties are laid down for individual materials. If the individual measures are available as EU directives, they are implemented in the national Consumer Goods Ordinance. General requirements for "good manufacturing practice" during the manufacturing process of food contact materials and articles are additionally specified in Regulation (EU) No. 2023/2006.
